About Us
Discover who we are, what inspires us, and how we're building a brighter future!
Autism Independent Living Association (AiLA) was started in 2014 by Leanne Carr, who has a son with autism, and Michael Frost, an autistic adult. They recognized a critical need to establish a community where autistic adults could thrive, fulfilling their desire for independence while remaining rooted, contributing citizens.
Today, AiLA is a registered non-profit charitable organization in Edmonton. We are uniquely proud to be 100% volunteer-led. Every initiative, event, and milestone is driven by the dedication of our community members and allies who donate their time to make the vision of independent living a reality.
Our Mission + Initiatives
Our flagship endeavour is the development of an intentional, supportive housing community for Edmonton’s autistic population. This vision includes our Resident Council initiative, which will provide peer-led supportive services alongside professional and natural supports.
Beyond housing, we foster connection through our Health, Wellness, and Social Committee. Led by autistic adults, this committee organizes events that build meaningful friendships and validates individual worth. We prioritize skill-building for all our members through a learn-by-doing approach.
A recent highlight of this philosophy was our Empowering Independence Through Cooking series, featured in Thrive magazine. In partnership with the Edmonton Community Foundation and the Edmonton Public Library, our members took to the kitchen to master nutritious meal prep, grocery budgeting, and kitchen safety.
Whether it’s a member-led Paint Night fundraiser, a cooking class at the library, or a participant taking the lead on volunteer coordination, we believe that providing space for autistic adults to lead and learn is the key to true independence.
Sweet Support - Autismal CAREmels
In 2024, we launched our social enterprise, Totally Autismal CAREmels. These are small-batch, handmade treats crafted by our autistic members. Every purchase supports our mission and provides our members with hands-on experience in a supportive social enterprise environment.
